New Delhi , Oct. 27

The Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Mr Murli Deora, said on Friday that more cities were to be covered under the city gas distribution network in a phased manner depending on the availability of gas, and development of gas pipeline infrastructure.

Speaking at a function in connection with signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Petronet LNG Ltd (PLL) and Pragati Power Corporation of Delhi State Government, the Minister said that an investment of Rs 9,000 crore was projected for such projects during the 11th five-year plan.

The MoU is a crucial building block in the commitment of the Central and State Government to make the national capital self sufficient in power generation requirements. The current power demand of Delhi is around 4,100 MW, while the supplies are around 3,400 MW leaving a shortfall of about 700 MW. The shortfall is likely to increase during 2010 when the city hosts the Commonwealth games.
