Coimbatore , Oct. 29

The Union Finance Minister, Mr P. Chidambaram, is expected to lay the foundation stone for a convention centre at the GV Fair Grounds here on November 1.

"The project, estimated to cost about Rs 10 crore would be complete in a span of two years. A major portion of the funding would be undertaken by the GV Memorial Trust,'' said its Managing Trustee, Ms Rajshree Pathy. The project promoters are in the process of identifying an architect.

"It would have multi-faceted use and would come up with a seating capacity of 1,000 persons,'' she said.

Stating that a latest convention centre was the need of the hour for a city that was poised to emerge into an ideal IT destination, Ms Pathy said the proposed initiative would add value to the existing Codissia Trade Fair complex. The Union Minister for Communication and IT, Mr Dayanidhi Maran, is expected to release a commemorative stamp and first day cover on her late father G. Varadaraj the same day.
