Diabetes on the rise in children

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Oct. 29

An increasing number of children in the age group of 8 to 15 years have been found to be suffering from Type 2 Diabetes, generally common in adults, according to the Research Society for the Study of Diabetes in India (RSSDI).

The prevalence of diabetes in India occurs in an age group of 30 and above which is ten years younger than the age group suffering from diabetes in developed countries.

Prediabetes

Increasingly, sedentary lifestyles of children has now led researchers and physicians to focus on prediabetes. "The country, which is the diabetic capital of the world, with an estimated population of 35 million, faces an epidemic," says Dr S.V. Madhu, Chairman, RSSDI, Delhi Chapter.

RSSDI will discuss approaches for the prevention of diabetes in a three-day conference from November 3 to 5 in the Capital, which will be attended by 4,000 leading physicians, diabetologists and endocrinologists, both from within and outside the country.
