Govt sets up centres for auto, component exports certification

New Delhi , Oct. 29

National Automotive Testing and R&D Infrastructure Project (NATRIP), a Department of Heavy Industry venture, has tied up with the Vehicle Certification Agency (VCA) of the Government of UK to test and certify vehicles and components to be exported from India.

After this tie-up, vehicles can be tested at NATRIPcentres in India and be certified by VCA. VCA can test and certify vehicles being exported to the European countries, Australia, parts of the US, and Japan.

At present, vehicle and component manufacturers who export, physically move their vehicles to the destination country for testing and certification as per the standards of the destination country.

Indian industry spends about Rs 450 crore annually on homologation and certification.

"When the centres are set up, in the first full year, the savings for Indian automotive industry is likely to be about 40 per cent. In the future, with capacity expansion, the savings could go up to 85 per cent," said Mr Sunil Chaturvedi, CEO, NATRIP.

NATRIP plans to set up two new homologation centres (centres that make the vehicles suitable to domestic conditions) near New Delhi and Chennai. It also plans to upgrade Automotive Research Association of India at Pune and Vehicle Research and Development Establishment at Ahmednagar. Moreover, the largest centre is being set up at Indore.

However, NATRIP's tie-up with VCA is not exclusive in nature. Both the agencies are free to tie up with other firms for similar venture, Mr Chaturvedi said.
