Opinion - Letters
Beyond Reservation

This is with reference to "Limit to reservations" (Business Line, October 28). Mr Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee has sent an appropriate reminder to the nation.

The present system of reservations may earn brownie points for political parties, but it may not benefit society at large.

Debates continue on the modes of expanding the scope of reservations in terms of quantity and quality. But few seem concerned about the presence of social identities.

Individuals themselves are not free of narrow sectarian prejudices. How, then, can one blame the political parties for their policies?

Higher education or private sector jobs are a distant dream for the majority of the oppressed classes. The observations of Mr Bhattacharjee should be seen in this background. It should be understood that reservations are not the end, but only the means to larger socio-economic reforms.
