AP plans survey to assess role of trading in GSDP

Distributive Trade Index on the anvil

It is estimated that trading activity, including hotels and restaurants, contributes 15 per cent to GSDP. Thirty per cent of all trading activity is agriculture-based.

Hyderabad , Oct. 30

After 30 years, Andhra Pradesh will soon embark on a drive to assess the contribution of trading activity, including retailers, wholesalers and brokers, to the Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP). The base year for the survey is 2005-06.

A major outcome of the survey would be evolution of Distributive Trade Index (DTI), which would help the State gauge the contribution of trading activity to State's economy periodically.

ESTIMATE

It is estimated that trading activity, including hotels and restaurants, contributes 15 per cent to GSDP. Thirty per cent of all trading activity is agriculture-based.

SURVEY

It was in 1976 that a survey of this nature was conducted. To be carried out by the Directorate of Economics and Statistics, the Distributive Trade Survey would throw light on the kind of income generated in this segment.

"We have collected information of all the four lakh traders, the nature of their trading activity. We have taken a sample size of five per cent," Dr Saroja Rama Rao, Director of the directorate, told Business Line.

"The survey would reflect structural changes that have taken place in the last three decades."

The directorate would multiply the results of the survey to reflect the total number of traders. Based on the outcome, it would evolve an index.

UPDATE

"We will upgrade the data quarterly to update the index. This would give us an idea of the current trading activity in the State."

The directorate has kicked off a State-level training programme to prepare the officials for the survey. This would be followed up by district-level training programmes. "We hope to begin the survey in December," Dr Saroja said.
