Economy States - Kerala Stand up to competition, PM tells commodity trade Our Bureau
Thiruvananthapuram , Nov. 1 Kerala should not shut itself out to competition posed by commodity imports but strive to stand up to it by improving crop yields and quality. The Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, said here today that this could be achieved through selective application of science and technology tools. He said this while inaugurating the golden jubilee celebrations of the State Formation Day at an elaborate function here. The State should take upon itself the task of squarely meeting the challenge posed by a largely integrating world and not choose to run away from it. The Prime Minister also emphasised the need for committing more investments in the social sector. "The public services need to be efficiently delivered so as to be able to meet the State's diverse contemporary needs," he added.
INTEGRATED PLAN
The UPA Government was in the process of preparing an integrated plan aimed at the all-round development of the plantation sector in the State. The case of the traditional sectors would also be suitably attended to. "The Centre will do all that is possible to revive the plantation economy in the State," the Prime Minister said. While praising the Kerala model of development, he noted that the State should scout for new avenues of growth in tune with the changed times and economic realities. In this connection, he also observed that the State should look at providing more skill-based education to its employable youth population.
