Telecommunications `Stop unwanted calls on international roaming' Our Bureau
New Delhi , Nov. 1 Next time you travel abroad you may be saved from attending to unwanted calls landing on your cell phone. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India has asked all mobile service providers to provide a ring back tone facility, which would enable subscribers to inform the callers that they are on international roaming and to continue with the call only if it is urgent. While using the international roaming facility, mobile subscribers generally do not receive the Caller Line Identification on incoming calls, which makes it difficult for them to identify and choose the calls. With international roaming rates as high as Rs 70 a minute, it results in huge bills for the consumer. The problem has become more acute due to increased number of telemarketing calls.
Ring back tone
For overcoming this problem, the authority has asked all the service providers to provide ring back tone facility to their subscribers who avail themselves of international roaming and report the compliance within 15 days. This facility shall play any desired message such as `I am on international roaming, please disconnect if not urgent' to the calling party. With this arrangement, the calling subscriber may be discouraged to proceed with the call to the international roaming subscriber unless it is a call of an urgent nature. "This facility is easy to implement and the control of switching on and off will be with the roaming subscriber. It would also stop any breach of privacy and requirement of taking any permission from the roaming subscribers for implementing this facility. The service providers are required to inform all their subscribers about the availability of such facility," the telecom regulator said.
