Kerala lorry strike hits TN poultry sector

Our Bureau

Coimbatore , Nov. 1

The strike by Kerala truck operators has severely hit the movement of poultry products from Tamil Nadu into Kerala, which is a major market for the State's poultry producers.

"The broiler movement into Kerala remained paralysed for the past two or three days due to the lorry strike affecting the poultry growers," said Mr Lakshmanan, President of the Palladam based Broiler Coordination Committee.

Though the poultry industry here hopes for an early end the stalemate, the choking of the market due to the lorry strike has affected the broiler price sentiment in the local market. The BCC quoted rate per kg of broiler today is Rs 28, but the wholesale price is quoted at a discount of Rs 2/3 from the BCC rate, the market sources said.

Broiler supplies from Tamil Nadu to Kerala are estimated around 20 lakh birds a week. Besides the live birds, Kerala-based poultry farms also import a good volume of poultry feed from the State, which has also come to a standstill.

The sources said the table eggs supplies to Kerala from Tamil Nadu too have remained affected.
