`Suitable bet for food processing'

Mumbai , Nov 3

The Italian Trade Commissioner, Mr Vittorio Mecozzi, has said that Italian companies are looking at the prospect of setting up a technology park in Maharashtra.

"The presence of fruits and vegetable farms, favourable conditions, et al make Maharashtra a suitable place for the food processing industry," he said during the launch of the month-long Italian trade festival, Festa Italiana 2006.

Italian corporates have plans to ferment wines and manufacture fruit drinks in the technology park, which will also provide ancillary services such as packaging and storage.

"We will consider Punjab, West Bengal and Tamil Nadu for setting up similar clusters. Our focus will also be on emerging sectors like infrastructure, auto components, tourism, Defence and film production."

Festa Italiana 2006 will showcase Italian businesses in banking and insurance, chemicals, tourism, agro-food, textiles, ceramics, culture and food.

"The month-long festival will support and enhance Indo-Italian trade relations. We expect the $3-billion bilateral trade between the countries to grow in the years to come," said Mr Narinder Nayar, President of the Indo-Italian Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

The events will feature concerts by the orchestra of Teatro Regio di Parma, closely associated with the operas of Guiseppe Verdi, Italian cuisine expo and presentation of accessories by fashion designer Roberta di Camerino.
