Kerala transport strike called off

Our Bureau

Thiruvananthapuram , Nov. 3

The strike by private bus operators and truck owners in the State was called off today after talks with the State Transport Minister, Mr Mathew T. Thomas.

The State Government has made no new promises to the transport operators, the Minister told a press conference. The Government will do what it can to speed up the introduction of an Ordinance to exempt heavy vehicles in the State from using speed governors. The State Government has also agreed to hold discussions on other concerns of the transport industry at a later date, he said.

However, leaders of the bus and lorry owners' coordination committee said that they were only suspending the strike. A decision on resuming the strike will be taken on November 20, they added.
