Mangalore , Nov. 3 The Karnataka Bus Operators' Federation has extended its support to the decision of the Federation of Karnataka State Lorry Owners' and Agents' Association to stop plying of vehicles on Sakleshpur-Mangalore stretch of road on Bangalore-Mangalore National Highway No. 48, from November 10. The President of the Federation of Karnataka State Lorry Owners' and Agents' Association, Mr G.R. Shanmugappa, had recently announced in Bangalore that the federation members will stop movement of vehicles on Sakleshpur-Mangalore stretch of road from November 10, till the stretch is repaired for traffic. Addressing presspersons here on Friday, Mr Rajavarma Ballal, President of the Karnataka Bus Operators' Federation, said that the Sakleshpur-Mangalore stretch was totally damaged, and it was difficult to take vehicles on that road. Mr Ballal said that he, along with other representatives from the transport industry, had met senior officials in the Department of Surface Transport regarding the poor conditions of road along the NH 17 and NH 48. A senior official from the department will soon visit the region and survey the condition of roads, he said. Referring to the condition of roads on these two highways, he said, "We have to send our vehicles for repair every second day due to the poor condition of roads." Mr Ballal said that no amount has been spent on the maintenance of the National Highways for the past four to six years. Speaking on the occasion, Capt J.P. Menezes, President of Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry , said that the poor condition of roads will affect the economy of Karnataka in particular and the nation in general.
