Bancon 2006: Sidelights

Wake UP!

The afternoon sessions at Bancon 2006, although packed to capacity and with about hundred standing, saw a couple of bankers catching up on their sleep. The sumptuous food, dim lights and perhaps the familiar ground covered by speakers combined to make some of them doze off.

  • When it was the turn of the Chairman and Managing Director, Corporation Bank, Mr B. Sambamurthy, to speak, he began,

"Lights on please. I want to see who's awake and who's asleep".

    Ethnic cleansing or civilisation?

  • Mr Amitabha Guha, Managing Director, State Bank of Hyderabad, began his presentation on inclusive growth with a quote from Howard Winters, "Civilisation is the process in which one gradually increases the number of people included in "we" or "us" and at the same time decreases those labelled "you" or "them" until that category has no one left"

That seemed like a noble and appropriate quote to begin with, until, a fellow scribe said "They also call this ethnic cleansing!"

How long a speech should be?

Speakers were given 10 minutes to make their presentations and there was no sign of anyone adhering to that limit.

  • When it was the turn of Ms Naina Lal Kidwai, CEO, HSBC, she said that she would try to remember an old adage of how long a talk should be.

It ran thus: "A talk should be like a lady's dress - long enough to cover the essentials, short enough to be interesting!"
