Opinion - Letters
Technocrats and agriculture

This is with reference to "Technocrats have let down agriculture" (Business Line, November 3). Politicians have complicated the problem by not addressing the main issue. Public sector banks and other private banks have focused mainly on technology.

Though the government puts lot of pressure on lending to agriculture, the promises remain on paper.

Power subsidy should be extended especially to small, marginal and dry land farmers. Research in agricultural universities should be given priority and researchers should be made accountable. Lab to land communications should be strengthened.

The government should make better use of services of international research institutions such as International Crop Research Institute for Semi-arid Tropics and International Food Policy Institute
