Special cells for forest conservation

Our Bureau

Thiruvananthapuram , Nov. 5

Each of the four southern States will create a special cell within their respective forest departments to ensure better cooperation and coordination in the efforts to conserve forests.

This was decided at a two-day meeting of Forest Ministers from Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu, which concluded in the city on Saturday.

Speaking to the media after the conference, the Kerala Forest Minister, Mr Benoy Viswam, said that the four States would develop protocols for joint patrolling, raids and other forest-protection measures in sensitive forest areas.

COORDINATION

Communication between forest officials of the four States will be improved and regular meetings held. The States will also develop combined action plans for managing trans-border forest resources such as biosphere reserves and national parks.

The four States will also create interactive Web sites to disseminate information on best practices and protocols in dealing with forest and wildlife offences, joint forest management, ecotourism and so on. These sites will be linked to the Web site of the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests. The conference also decided to share information on technologies and strategies used for forest conservation.
