Coonoor tea prices drop

P.S. Sundar

Coonoor , Nov. 5

Even after dropping prices, the auctioneers had to withdraw sizable volumes of teas at the auctions of the Coonoor Tea Trade Association (CTTA) here as the demand was far inadequate to absorb the huge volume on offer.

A volume of 14.36 lakh kg was offered for sale. This was the highest volume at the auctions so far this year.

High-end teas upset

"A fair weight of the brighter liquoring leaf teas which fetch over Rs 65 a kg had to be withdrawn for want of bids. The similar category of the dust teas could be sold only when the prices were dropped up to Rs 3 a kg", an auctioneer said.

In all, some 30 per cent of the teas, mostly CTC, were withdrawn for want of adequate bids.

On the export front, CIS supported blacker well made sorts paying Rs 48 -50 a kg. Pakistan was selective.

Among the teas from bought-leaf factories, Darmona Estate got the highest price of Rs 79 a kg, followed by Vigneshwar Estate Rs 73.11, Kannavarai Estate Rs 70.11 and Highfield Estate Special Rs 70.

Among the orthodox teas from corporate sector, Prammas got the highest price of Rs 120.23 a kg, followed by Curzon and Tiger Hill Rs 120, Corsely Rs 118.01, Mailoor Rs 117.25, Colacum by Rs 112, Chamraj Rs 107.10, Havukkal and Kodanaad Rs 106.
