Building aggressiveness

A. B. Sivakumar

A fierce war is on in Corporate India, one in which only the fittest can survive. The survival instinct is now more than ever before. This does not provide companies the luxury of relaxation and for the people working beyond the call of regular duty is usual.

However, even while all this is common, it must be ensured that attitude-building goes on. The trick is to maintain a level of communication with people at all levels and explain to them the new imperatives. Also, it is essential that the organisation creates learning opportunities and institutionalises an environment where people find meaning in what they do, see the connect between what they do and the rewards they get for superior performance, or perform tasks they normally would not do.

Multi-tasking and meticulous planning are essential if organisations have to capitalise on the readiness of employees to adapt to new situations. In fact, since a large number of organisations are working towards excellence, individuals have to perform roles that are not only new, but also add value in terms of results.

Aggressive attitudes can be developed in employees by providing them with learning opportunities, getting them to see the connect between their contribution and the achievement of organisational goals, and so on. This systematic approach is important, as employees should not become unwilling passengers in the journey to attain excellence.

Most individuals have the urge to perform, seek new horizons of development, and excel in whatever they do. This urge can and should be converted into a positive energy that should be manifested in the development of pugnacious attitudes.
