Customs Dept plans e-payment

The Chennai Custom House plans to introduce electronic payment (e-payment) of customs duty in future, according to Mr A. K. Srivastava, Chief Commissioner of Customs - Chennai Zone. This is part of the department's plan to facilitate electronic transaction among stakeholders like shippers, port and shipping lines. Some steps taken by the department so far in this direction include, implementing a risk management system to process cargo and facilitating Internet based filing of documents. Mr Srivastava said the department has made facilities to transact 99.5 per cent of documents electronically.
