Kerala takes up projects worth Rs 1,442 cr

The Fisheries Department is focussing on restoration of the lost livelihood of the coastal people.

Thiruvananthapuram , Nov. 8

The Kerala Government has set rolling the `Tsunami Emergency Assistance Project' (TEAP) at Alappad panchayat in Alappuzha district.

This is part of a comprehensive programme to improve the living conditions of the people in the coastal areas of the State that was hit by tsunami a couple of years ago.

The Government has taken up projects worth Rs 1,441.75 crore, which are slated to be completed by 2009. Apart from TEAP, the programme includes `Tsunami Rehabilitation Project'.

FACILITIES

The Fisheries Minister, Mr S. Sharma, said here on Wednesday that a clutch of facilities would be established in the Alappad panchayat, which will include a community resource centre, IT centre, banking, telemedicine centre and play school.

The Minister said that the Fisheries Department was focussing on restoration of the lost livelihood of the coastal people and a total amount of Rs 64.85 crore would be spent for the purpose. The department would also associate itself with the other projects being implemented by the various government departments.

A common production centre would be set up to help the small-time entrepreneurs market their products. Besides, the department would provide a modern design studio, testing laboratory, storage room, chill room and heater and drier room.

The Forest and Fisheries department would jointly implement an afforestation programme along the 560-km long coastal belt of the State. Also, around 10,000 families living in the affected areas would be relocated. The Government had set aside Rs 179 crore for these activities, the Minister said.

The Fisheries Department would spend a total of Rs 24.38 crore in the current year on the projects. More than 50 per cent of the amount would be earmarked for women struggling for a living in these areas, he said.
