Kandla port cargo to be cleared

Virendra Pandit

Ahmedabad , Nov. 9

Due to extended Diwali holidays, cargo of imported wheat and fertilisers piled up at the busy Kandla Port in Gujarat but officials are hopeful of clearing it by the month-end, reports said here on Wednesday.

According to sources at Kandla Port, 1.67 lakh tonnes of wheat and fertilisers (urea and di-ammonium phosphate) had been moved out of the port premises after the Diwali holidays and the remaining 70,000 tonnes of fertilisers and 1.5-lakh tonnes of wheat are expected to be transported to their destinations by November-end.

An official of Indian Potash Ltd (IPL) said the company had imported 3.5-lakh tonnes of fertilisers. Of this, 50,000 tonnes had already arrived at Kandla, while two-lakh tonnes would reach Mundra and one-lakh tonne at Kandla by this month-end.

Post-Diwali, some 10,000 tonnes of fertiliser had been transported out of Kandla. The problem arose because the available labour force was diverted by the Food Corporation of India to lift wheat cargo on a priority basis.

However, with labourers expected to return shortly, the IPL officials said nearly 2,500 tonnes of fertilisers would be transported daily by goods trains having 40 wagons of 500-tonne capacity each.
