North likely to witness fog

Vinson Kurian

Thiruvananthapuram , Nov. 9

A western disturbance passing into the country from the northwest border and impacting weather from Thursday is forecast to kick up some fog in its wake.

The eastward movement of the system will cause the prevailing temperatures to dip by two to four degree C from Sunday onwards. Fog conditions are likely to develop in the plains of the north and northwest, India Meteorological Department said in an update on Thursday.

But the fog would be `shallow' in its build and should not cause any serious disruption to flight schedules in the affected region, says Dr Akhilesh Gupta of the Department of Science and Technology.

"We are expecting mercury to fall by three to four degree C from the prevailing 18 degree C. Thick fog that can throw flight operations into disarray is triggered at temperature levels of 10 degree C and below. Mercury is known to plumb such depths from December onwards only."

SLIGHT DELAY LIKELY

According to Dr Gupta, the worst possible scenario emerging could be of early morning flights getting slightly delayed. But he hastened to add that temperature, humidity and wind speeds would have a major role in deciding the intensity of fog on any given day.

The moisture associated with the trough in the westerly system is what triggers the fog. Residual moisture left behind by a passing western disturbance can gain further in intensity if the mercury dips suitably and winds calm down.

But this is not likely to happen with mercury hovering in the mid-teens (15 degree C) in the instant case.

RAIN, SNOWFALL

Traced to over north Pakistan and neighbourhood on Thursday afternoon, the westerly system is expected to bring scattered rain/snowfall activity over Jammu and Kashmir from the same night itself.

The cold and wet session is likely to continue into the next 48 hours and also extend into Himachal Pradesh and Uttaranchal. Isolated rain/thundershowers have been forecast for adjoining plains of northwest India on Friday and Saturday.

RAIN IN SOUTH

Fairly widespread rainfall with isolated heavy falls are likely over Tamil Nadu, Kerala, coastal Andhra Pradesh, coastal areas of West Bengal and Orissa during the next two-three days. Scattered rain/thundershowers is also likely over remaining parts of east India and the south peninsula.
