Chennai , Nov. 9

Gallery Sumukha, a Bangalore-based provider of space for art, is opening a gallery space here to showcase works of India's leading artists.

The 2,000-sq ft gallery would provide a wider platform for artists in the South to exhibit their work and showcase their talent, said Ms Premilla Baid, Director, Gallery Sumukha.

The gallery would be opened on November 15 with a group-show of works by nearly 60 artists such as Ms Arpana Caur, Mr Baiju Parthan, Mr Bose Krishnamachari, Mr Dhruv Mistry, Mr Jogen Chowdary, Mr Prabhakar Kolte, Mr K.G. Subramaniam and Mr S.G. Vasudev.

This would be followed by solo shows of Mr Ravikumar Kashi in December and Mr Vasudev in January, she told newspersons.

There is a boom in the Indian art market that is worth Rs 5,000 crore and to double by 2010. Art investment is considered to be both a sign of good business sense and taste. The cost of art ranges between Rs 10,000 and Rs 50 lakh (latter for works of senior artists such as Mr M.F. Hussain), she said.

Delhi and Mumbai are major art centres and reaped the benefits of the art boom. However, the action is shifting towards south, especially Chennai and Bangalore. The enormous talent pool, high standard of artwork produced in the south and the entrepreneurship shown by south Indian galleries are contributors to the shift, she said.
