`One should have six eyes around him and 360-degree vision'

Chennai , Nov. 9

"The critical factor for success of oneself and his organisation are perspective, information, leadership and maturity. If you have all these four, you are respected and consulted by other colleagues," said Mr Arun Bewoor, Managing Director - India, and Vice-President (India Region), International Flavours & Fragrances India Ltd, to the students of Meenakshi Sundararajan School of Management while speaking on `The attributes of an effective manager' at a Business Line club lecture.

Perspective, he says, is "the ability and desire to see the wider picture" — What business are we in and what need are we meeting? What macro factors can and have an impact on us? Does one know about the economy, environment, market, customer, category, competition, consumer, and the like? One should have six eyes around him and 360-degree vision to get a wider picture.

Anything that you do or say should be backed by qualitative and quantitative data to confirm or deny trends, he said. One should learn to analyse by numbers whether innate or desired. Information is required for macro and micro views of the entire picture. Information is essential for an articulate and convincing communication capability.

Every person has leadership qualities. "Leadership cannot be taught, it can only be learned and acquired," he said.

Maturity "is the capacity to see from the other's view. It is the intellect to reflect, pause, analyse and then `push' forward. The team listens to, understands and follows the path of a mature leader.

When all these four characteristics come together, a more complete and thorough manager is revealed, he added.
