Prafulla Das

Bhubaneswar , Nov. 9

Taking a major step forward, Arcelor-Mittal has formed an Indian subsidiary, Mittal Steel India Ltd, to implement its 12-million-tonne-per-annum steel plant project in Orissa.

This was revealed on Wednesday when top officials of the company apprised the Chief Minister, Mr Naveen Patnaik, about the progress on the project so far.

The parent company of Mittal Steel India Ltd had already given the go ahead to push the Orissa project forward and the draft memorandum of understanding was being readied, the Chief of the company's India operations, Mr Sanak Mishra, informed Mr Patnaik. He also added that a final decision on the site of the proposed greenfield steel project would be taken in five to six weeks.

The company was initially offered as many as seven sites for the project by the State Government. The company officials had visited four of these sites in the districts of Keonjhar, Bhadrak, Balasore and Ganjam.

Project Office

A final decision on the site will be taken after the consultant firm Mecon submits its final report to the company, Mr Mishra informed Mr Patnaik. The company was likely to set up its project office in Bhubaneswar shortly.
