Russia keen to join tri-nation pipeline project

Consultant's report on pricing formula expected soon

Russia has expressed its keenness to join the proposed Iran-Pakistan-India pipeline project. Russians have expressed their desire to be associated with the tri-nation project during the Minister of Petroleum & Natural Gas, Mr Murli Deora's visit to Russia, a senior Petroleum Ministry official said.
Indications are that Russia's Gazprom, the world's largest gas firm, is keen to participate in the construction of the $7.4-billion tri-nation pipeline that would bring gas from the giant South Pars fields in Iran to Pakistan and India.
Tri-lateral Meeting
India, Pakistan and Iran are currently discussing modalities of building the pipeline. The report of the neutral consultant Gaffney, Cline & Associates — appointed to suggest the pricing formula for natural gas that would flow through the proposed tri-nation pipeline — is expected soon, sources said. Once the report is received, then the next round of tri-lateral meeting of top officials of the three countries would take place, they added. According to sources, the consultant report would be the start-off point for further negotiations on the gas price.
At a recently concluded meeting of the representatives of the three countries in Dubai, India is understood to have given its views on the terms of reference.
