Govt tightens security at airports

The Government has tightened security at airports around the country after receiving an anonymous letter claiming that Al-Qaeda was planning to bomb Chennai airport.
"The anonymous letter written in Tamil was found at Tiruchi airport," Mr Ajay Prasad, Secretary (Civil Aviation), told newspersons on Thursday.
"The letter talked about using sophisticated technology to blow up Chennai. The letter also mentions airports at Tiruchi, Coimbatore and some airports in Kerala. The authorities were immediately informed and necessary action taken to ensure that no untoward incident occurs.
From now, all handbags would be physically checked and passengers would have to undergo secondary-level checks before boarding the aircraft. More surveillance of car parks at airports is also on the cards.
"The heightened security procedures could lead to some flight delays. We have not asked the airlines to advance the reporting time for passengers. This is something for the airlines to decide. However, we do not want to create panic. Hence, entry of people other than passengers is not being banned. There are good systems in place to ensure that no untoward incident occurs," Mr Prasad said.
