The Union Government has agreed to a proposal from Andhra Pradesh to set up an exclusive special economic zone (SEZ) for biotechnology at the nearby Genome Valley.
Announcing this on Thursday after inaugurating the Global Bio-Pharma Conference, Chief Minister Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy called for collaboration between the global biopharmaceutical industry and local industry to find solutions for emerging problems such as chikungunya, dengue and avian flu.
Ms D. Purandhareswari, Union Minister of State for Human Resources Development, said that the size of biotech industry in the country grew to $1.1 billion in 2004-05, showing an increase of 37 per cent over the previous year's figure.
Of this, biopharmaceuticals took the lion's share of 75 per cent.
"Indian firms account for 62 per cent of the biopharma sector," she said.
