Nissan too may use facility; Suzuki plan off

S. Muralidhar

Paris , Nov. 9

Nissan is also likely to use the new manufacturing facility for producing its cars for the Indian market.

Speaking on the possibility of stepping up the greenfield plant's capacity to locally produced Nissan cars for India, Mr Carlos Ghosn said that currently, Nissan is looking at using this facility for meeting future domestic demand.

Nissan has cancelled a plan to build a factory with Suzuki Motor Corp in India, which had been announced earlier.

"You cannot compete in the Indian market if you don't produce there," said Mr Ghosn.

Nissan currently only imports its X-Trail for sale in India. The company has been exploring the possibility of expanding its product portfolio.

However, with volumes being low for the kind of premium passenger cars it makes, the Japanese company has been unable to expand its presence in the Indian market.

Mr Ghosn, who is also CEO of the Japanese company, said that the company would continue to source about 50,000 small cars every year from Maruti-Suzuki, through its existing alliance, for export to European markets.
