The National Highways Builders Federation (NHBF) apprehends a significant slowing down in the highway development programme of the nation. The federation has alleged that the National Highways Authority of India unilaterally stopping payment of price escalation on 14 highway contracts on the Golden Quadrilateral has put severe constraints on contractors in going ahead with the jobs.

Contractors including L&T, IVRCL, Gammon India, Nagarjuna Construction Co, Unitech, ITD Cementation, BSCPL and Navayuga Engineering, have been affected with non-payment of escalation bills amounting to Rs 400 crore, according to NHBF. Land acquisition, removal of utilities and felling of trees are among the other major hindrances faced by the contractors.
