Awards & Honours States - Gujarat Mundra port bags Lloyd's List award Our Bureau

Ahmedabad , Nov. 10 The Mundra Port and Special Economic Zone Ltd (MPSEZ), part of the Rs 16,000-crore Adani Group, has been awarded the Port Authority Award for West Asia and the Indian subcontinent, instituted by Lloyd's List, for the year 2006. Mr Vinod Shah, Managing Director, Adani Global, received the award, which was presented by Mr Mukesh Oza of Samsara Group, at a ceremony held at Dubai recently. According to a press release, the award is based on evaluation of over 50 major ports located in West Asia and the Indian subcontinent on parameters such as leadership, quality of services and commitment to its customers. The panel of judges comprised well-known figures from the shipping industry who rated the Mundra port as the best port on such parameters. The London-based 270-years-old Lloyd's List publication provides shipping and port related information and covers daily ship movements over 1,500 ports in 78 countries, round-the-clock and across the world. The Mundra port and Special Economic Zone manages one of the largest privately developed port and an emerging multi-sector special economic zone spread over 100 sq km area in the Kutchh peninsula. The port is an all-weather and has eight operational berths of which two handle container traffic. Four additional berths are under construction and are likely to be commissioned during the current financial year.
Traffic handling
The port had handled over eight million tonnes of bulk cargo and half a million tonnes of container cargo in FY 2005-06. The Mundra port is expected to handle over 14 million tonnes of bulk cargo and close to 0.6 million container cargo during current the financial year. The port-cum-SEZ has railroad and an airstrip. Utilities such as power, water, gas, social infrastructure, info-comm solution are being created for facilitating improvement in productivity, the release added.
