Tea Coimbatore tea posts largest turnover in South P.S. Sundar
Coonoor , Nov. 12 Coimbatore centre has posted the largest increase in turnover amidst all the three tea auction centres in the South. An analysis of the performances by Coonoor, Coimbatore and Kochi auction centres in the first nine months of this year shows that the turnover has increased in all the centres compared to last year. But, the highest increase of 31 per cent happened in Coimbatore. This is the only centre where both volume sold and the prices fetched were more. Between January and September, a volume of 1.68 crore kg was sold against 1.53 crore kg last year. Despite this increased volume, the prices also rose. On an average, every kg sold fetched Rs 8 more to reach Rs 49.31 a kg. Consequently, the overall earnings rose to Rs 82.84 crore from Rs 63.27 crore last year. In Coonoor auctions, the earnings rose by 12.25 per cent to reach Rs 135.02 crore, because of the unit price rising by Rs 12 a kg to reach Rs 48.05. The volume sold dropped to 2.81 crore kg from 3.33 crore kg. In Kochi, there has been no appreciable change in the volume sold which stood at 4.51 crore kg. But, the price rose Rs 4 a kg to average Rs 53.58. Consequently, the earnings rose by 7.27 per cent to Rs 241.65 crore. In all, teas worth Rs 460 crore had been sold in the these centres in the first nine months of this calendar against Rs 409 crore in the same period last year.
