Roadways Industry & Economy - Infrastructure States - West Bengal Bengal Unitech to develop terminal
The truck terminal at Kona in Howrah district of West Bengal will be developed into a logistics hub by Bengal Unitech Universal Infrastructure Company, a private firm, at a substantial investment. The terminal, spread over more than 100 acres, was launched in 2000 by the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority but remained virtually non-functional. KMDA therefore invited bids from private firms for leasing out the land. It is now learnt that the Bengal Unitech has acquired the land on 999 years lease from KMDA at Rs 108 crore. The work on the proposed hub is to start from early next year. The purpose of setting up the hub is to free the city of Kolkata of the acute congestion and a host of other problems, caused largely by the ingress of a large number of goods vehicles into the city. According to one estimate about 50,000 heavy-duty goods trucks enter the city every day. Once the hub is commissioned, these vehicles will be stopped at the hub, unloaded and consignments will be stored in warehouses to be located within the area. Several traders are believed to have shown interest in taking warehouse space on lease.
