Opinion - Letters
Human development

This is with reference to "Poor `human progress' in India" (Business Line, November 13). India's ranking in the Human Development Index is disappointing. There is a perception that it is unfair to compare India, with its billion plus population, to small countries such as the Netherlands and Sweden. But China has moved up from 85 to 81. Russia, Brazil, Sri Lanka are all ahead of us at 65, 69 and 93 respectively. We boast of 8 per cent GDP growth. But what use is that if the standard of living of the people remains unchanged? More needs to be invested in health and education.

`Health for all' should not remain a forgotten dream. And the goal of quality education for every child must be pursued relentlessly. Will the Eleventh Plan and the Budget meet these expectations?
