Shipping Industry & Economy - Economic Offences States - Kerala Crackdown at Kochi port yields results Our Bureau
Kochi , Nov. 13 The initiatives taken by the Kochi port on curbing illegal collection of money appears to have yielded results as the number of trailers arriving at the port from outside has increased substantially since the introduction of new measures. The port Chairman, Mr N. Ramachandran, told Business Line that the response from the trade is encouraging and there are no reports of any unlawful collection from trailers within the port limits in the past week.
CARTEL BUSTED
A member of the steamer agents association said that earlier the trade had to depend on the cartel formed in the Willingdon Island to hire trucks to move the cargo. The situation has changed now and the shipper has the freedom to hire any trailer or trucks from other terminals situated in the city outskirts. According to the Chairman, the measures taken by the port is slowly gaining momentum and there were no complaints from any quarters. "The port has strengthened the presence of police force in the Island and we are confident that we will be able to stamp out the problem soon," he said.
MOBILE SQUAD
The port, he said, has also set up a mobile squad comprising police, labour department officials, port officials and trade unions to monitor the situation in the Island and anybody facing a problem could complain directly by ringing the mobile squad. If the port receives any report of illegal collection of money, stern measures would be taken against them, he warned. The Chairman also said that a review meeting with the port users would be convened on Tuesday to take stock of the situation.
