UP has most working children

Our Bureau

Chennai , Nov. 13

There were 1.26 crore working children in the country, as per the 2001 Census, up from 1.12 crore in 1991, but down from 1.36 crore in 1981.

Uttar Pradesh accounted for the largest number of working children with 19.27 lakh in 2001. Andhra Pradesh was second with 13.63 lakh, followed by Rajasthan (12.62 lakh) and Bihar (11.17 lakh). Thirteen States and Union Territories witnessed a decline in working children population while 18 States saw an increase during the period from 1991 to 2001.

The Government proposes to extend the National Child Labour Project Scheme during the 11th Plan to more districts, which have a reasonable number of working children in hazardous occupations. The scheme is at present operational in 250 districts.
