Plantations Downtrend in arecanut prices Aravindan
Kottayam , Nov 14 Arecanut prices are witnessing a decline due to poor demand. Widespread disease in arecanut gardens has also wrought much damage to production. The market is reported to be on the verge of a crash. But the situation might change as and when the harvest gets over by January 2007, said Mr Ravindra Rao, Regional Manager, Campco, Thrissur. The news of a likely ban on gutkha had in no way affected the market, as it was not likely to be imposed, Mr Rao told Business Line. The producers of gutkha and pan masala are the major consumers of arecanut. According to reports, arecanut imported through official and unofficial channels are creating problems for the growing community. Though the Commerce Ministry has enhanced the import duty to prevent large-scale inflow into the country, it has not yielded the desired results. The flow of arecanut from Indonesia and Tanzania continues uninterrupted.
