India will be the `focus country' for Italy in 2007, making it the preferred destination for investments by Italian industry, according to Mr Vittorio Mecozzi, Italian Trade Commissioner.

He was addressing a press conference here to highlight the Festa Italiana, an Italian festival that will showcase its economy, culture and industry over next month in the major cities in India.

Mr Mecozzi said that in 2007, designated the `Year of Italy in India', official delegations from Italy will include over 100 companies that will look to explore investment opportunities in India.

The focus country programme will have an impact on investment over the next few years. After China, Italy is looking at India as an investment base.

Dr S. Sgambato, Secretary General, Indo-Italian Chamber of Commerce, said that the six-week long programme would highlight Italy's manufacturing and technological capability, machinery, art, business and lifestyle.

Focus areas of the industry include infrastructure, automobile, food and food processing, entertainment and lifestyle.

The programme — `Invest Your Talent in Italy' — will involve seven leading universities from Italy encouraging postgraduate students from India continue their higher education in Italy, he said.

The festival will include seminars, business-to-business meetings, exhibitions, concerts, lectures and road shows. The Italian Trade Commission, the Indo-Italian Chamber of Commerce, the Italian State Tourist Board and the Italian Cultural Institute are all coming together to present Italy on a `single canvas.'
