New Delhi , Nov 15

The President, Mr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, today called upon the construction industry to use information technology to reduce construction cost.

Inaugurating the world conference on `IT in design and construction', Mr Kalam suggested that the industry should aim to reduce the overall cost of construction by 20 per cent through IT application in planning, design, project management and optimum use of quality manpower.

He also suggested creation of user-friendly digital database library of different construction practices and norms in the country, including historical architectural designs of dams and places of worship.

NATIONAL STANDARDS

The President also called for a review of national standards for construction taking into account the flexibilities offered by IT, including energy and water efficiency standards.

He also stressed on the necessity of developing nation-wide management information system of the availability of quality manpower, construction aids, specialised software tools, standard costs of construction in different regions and availability of information to the public.
