The Hindu Business Line : Security helpdesk calls on the rise

With increasing number of cases of virus attacks, phishing scams, identity theft, hacking and such activities occurring, more number of IT decision makers are using security-related helpdesk calls.

A global survey on information technology decision makers of various organisations, conducted by Cisco revealed that two out of every five mobile workers would increase their security spending by 10 per cent next year.

Overall, 38 per cent of the IT decision makers reported increase in security-related helpdesk calls. In India, 55 per cent of the IT respondents reported a rise in security-related calls. Of this, 70 per cent cases were related to virus attacks, 61 per cent to spam-enabled phishing attacks and spyware cases accounted for 55 per cent.

The survey was conducted by interviewing 1,000 remote workers and 1,000 IT decision makers in 10 countries.

China, with more than 90 per cent of respondents willing to increase their IT security spending and 52 per cent respondents spending more than 10 per cent, tops the list. India is positioned second with 82 per cent respondents.

Brazil followed at 81 per cent, US at 66 per cent and Germany at 63 per cent. Subsequent to these countries, UK, Australia, Japan and France are ranked in the list.

Mr Jeff Platon, Vice President, security solutions and marketing said, "These findings are a call-to-arms for IT and security teams. The research clearly shows that user awareness does not always result in safe behaviour. Many users do not take assistance from the company's respective IT departments. This heightens the urgency for IT to adopt a more progressive, cost-conscious approach to protecting corporate data and employees."
