Tea prices rule easy at Coimbatore

Our Bureau

Coimbatore , Nov. 16

The total tea offerings this week amounted to 7.26 lakh kg, of which leaf grades accounted for 3.57 lakh kg and the rest of it was the dust. There was fair demand for the orthodox leaf.

Shippers to the CIS countries operated on the leaf grades with less strength. HLL showed interest on few lines of larger orthodox grades. Selected invoices of well-made large Nilgiri brokens remained steady. Others declined by Rs 3-4 with fair withdrawals.

There was some domestic enquiry for the orthodox dust at easier levels. AVT showed interest on high grown dusts. CTC leaf witnessed less demand. The demand was restricted from upcountry buyers for brighter liquoring teas. Exporters operating for CIS were fairly active on bolder grades. Additional export enquiry was evident at the lower end of the market from Iraqi shippers.

HLL operated on better medium/medium varieties selectively. Internal demand was also selective. Prices were overall lower by Rs 2 to Rs 3 and sometimes more with some withdrawals.

There was fair demand for the CTC dust at lower levels and all sorts were irregularly easier by Rs 3-4 a kg. Internal buyers were active with selective support from HLL, AVT and Indoserve. Selected lines of medium/plainer sorts saw some export enquiry

The orthodox high grown was quoting between Rs 62 and Rs 88, while best CTC teas ruled between Rs 47.50 and Rs 50. The good CTC dust was however higher, quoting between Rs 53 and Rs 74.
