Sethusamudram to develop fishing harbours

Raja Simhan T.E.

Invites bids to prepare detailed project reports

Chennai , Nov. 16

A multipurpose port with fishing harbour at Rameswaram and four fishing harbours at Muthupet, Sethubhavachatram, Thondi and Mookaiyur have been planned for Tamil Nadu. Sethusamudram Corporation Ltd, which is constructing a navigational channel between Gulf of Mannar and Palk Bay at a cost of around Rs 2,400 crore, is developing these facilities as part of its project. The plan is to construct an integrated fishing harbour at Rameswaram with provision of cargo vessels and parking /repair facilities by reviewing the technical report related to Rameswaram Fishing Harbour prepared by Central Institute of Coastal Engineering for Fishery, Bangalore.

The report will conduct traffic survey ascertaining the number and size of fishing crafts and cargo vessels likely to be accommodated in the port. It will also prepare the cost estimate along with specification for the execution of the project, and possible investment and cost recovery models in the next 25 years examining the requirement of the area of the dock basin, size of the approximate channel and port entrance.

The corporation also invited bids from project consultants and financial advisory firms to prepare detailed project reports for development of fishing harbours at Muthupet (in Thiruvarur district), Sethubhavachatram (Thanjavur), Thondi (Ramanathapuram) and Mookaiyur (Ramanathapuram) with a provision for handling, parking and repair of fishing vessels and allied facilities.

The study will look into technical, economic and environmental aspects of fishing harbours. It will prepare, design and operation related to fishing activities, including receipt and dispatch of the catch, receipt and maintenance and servicing of the fishing crafts and fishing gear.

The study would also conduct detailed traffic survey for ascertaining the numbers, types and size of the vessels likely to be handled at the fish landing jetties. Development of multipurpose port with fishing harbour of international standards and limited handling facility at Rameswaram is essential to accommodate large number of fishing crafts operating in Palk Bay and Gulf of Mannar off Rameswaram. It will also help to meet cargo-handling needs of Ramanathapuram, Sivagangai and Karaikudi districts, says information available in the corporation's Web site.
