Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) was announced the winner of a prize for business excellence under the CII Exim Award scheme. The recognition was bestowed on BHEL's heavy electrical equipment plant at Haridwar. Jointly instituted by CII and Exim Bank, the award is based on the model developed by the European Foundation for Quality Management.

BHEL's TQM (total quality management) initiative included benchmarking and improving its products and internal processes to global standards. The award was presented to Mr S. K. Jain, Director on the Board, BHEL, by Mr Katta Subramanya Naidu, Karnataka Minister for Industries, at the CII summit 2006 held in the city on Thursday. The company's Trichy, Hyderabad and Bhopal units also received commendation certificates for significant achievements in TQM, while the electronics division at Bangalore received a commendation for `strong commitment to TQM', said the release issued by the company.
