Pact for funding infrastructure projects in TN

For Rs 45,000-crore urban infrastructure project

Chennai , Nov. 17

The Tamil Nadu Government has entered into an agreement with the Centre for funding assistance under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) for a Rs 45,000-crore urban infrastructure development project covering the Chennai metropolitan area, according to an official press release.

The seven-year agreement also covers infrastructure development of urban and suburban areas of Coimbatore and Madurai, the release said. Chennai and the suburban areas covering 20 municipalities and 214 village panchayats are covered under the project.

The outlays for the various projects are: Rs 6,321 crore for drinking water projects; Rs 2,300 crore for underground sewage schemes; Rs 845 crore for municipal solid waste disposal; Rs 1,424 crore for rainwater drainage; Rs 17,254 crore for transport infrastructure; Rs 600 crore for Mass Rapid Transport System; Rs 7,000 crore for metro rail; and Rs 5,000 crore for developing satellite townships.

Of the total project outlay, 35 per cent will be through Central grant, 15 per cent from the State Government and 50 per cent through contributions from the local bodies. Projects to be undertaken in the current year includes Rs 500 crore drinking water project, Rs 400 crore municipal solid waste management project, Rs 200 crore underground drainage project and a Rs 170 crore development work, according to the release.
