GROUP DISCUSSION: Mr G. Sridhar, General Manager, Marketing and Proposals, Enmas Andritz Private Ltd, with students of Saranathan College of Engineering in Tiruchi during a BL Club meeting. — R. Ashok

Tiruchi , Nov. 17

The concept of globalisation in the present-day context provides scope for students of management schools in India to take advantage of the emerging opportunities in international commerce and business.

India is one of the few countries which enjoys a conducive climate to meet the challenges and match the global needs, especially with regard to competence and communication skills in English, said Mr G. Sridhar, General Manager, Marketing and Proposals, Enmas Andritz Pvt Ltd, Tiruchi, Delivering a lecture on `International Business' to mark the inauguration of `Business Line Club' at Saranathan College of Engineering here, Mr Sridhar said unlike most other countries, India accounted for several well-knit factors including the huge human resource, well-established industrial base and above all an English-speaking workforce. He said consistent quality, monitoring customer satisfaction, transparent interaction, long-term perspective and leveraging of resources for optimal results were some of the key factors for success in international business.

On the `weakness' of the Indian environment, he cited poor infrastructure and lack of quality brand image. There was a strong case for improving infrastructure such as roads and airports. Countries such as Brazil, Philippines, South Korea and Czech Republic were posing a challenge to India.

Terming the 8.5 per cent GDP growth rate as `fantastic', he asked the students to be fully aware of the global scenario in industrial, commercial and communication sectors. "Hone your skills and take due advantage of communication technology, particularly Internet," he said.

Students should keep abreast of knowledge-taking cue from successful industrial houses such as Reliance, L&T and the hosiery units from Tirupur, Mr Sridhar said.

The Head of Department of Management Studies of the college, Mr P. Kothandaraman, and the Regional General Manager, The Hindu, Mr V. Srikanthan, were among those who spoke.

An interactive session was held in which Mr Sridhar clarified the students' doubts on transparency in international business and the nuances of maintaining quality.
