Agri-Biz & Commodities - Co-operatives
Campco to widen network

`The presence of a cooperative to buy the commodity will instil confidence among growers.'

Mangalore , Nov. 17

The Mangalore-based Central Arecanut and Cocoa Marketing and Processing Cooperative (Campco) Ltd is planning to expand its arecanut procurement network by opening four more procurement centres in Davangere, Chamarajanagar, K.R. Pet and Sringeri in Karnataka.

Of these centres, Chamarajanagar and K.R. Pet are the non-traditional arecanut-growing areas.

The Campco President, Mr S.R. Rangamurthy, told Business Line here on Thursday that the cooperative is focusing on non-traditional locations to instil confidence among farmers and to bring stability to the market.

Many farmers have taken up arecanut cultivation in Chamarajanagar district of Karnataka in the past few years. Now they are selling the commodity in Tumkur and Sira markets. Considering the quantity of production of the commodity in the area, the cooperative has decided to open an arecanut-procuring centre at Chamarajanagar. "The presence of a cooperative to buy the commodity will instil confidence among growers," he said, adding that the cooperative expects to procure around 15,000 quintals of arecanut from Chamarajanagar region.

The Chamarajanagar centre will be opened on December 2, and Davangere centre on November 30. The dates of inauguration of other two centres are yet to be finalised.

The number of arecanut procurement centres, which stood at seven during 1974-75, increased to 46 during 2005-06. The procurement of arecanut increased from 81,368 quintals in 1974-75 to 3,62,600 quintals in 2005-06.
