Telecommunications `Scalability is key to rollout of 3G tech' Our Bureau
Mumbai , Nov. 17 3G technology is all set for a full-fledged launch in India by the end of 2007 or early 2008. For effective rollout of 3G, the country must have hardware scalability along with software scalability, according to Mr G.K. Agarwal, Principal General Manager of BSNL. "We need to have lower-cost 3G with open standards to trigger growth in this arena. We must cater to both the masses as well as the high end users," he said at a 3G Conference on Friday. According to estimates, there are 125 commercial 3G players operating in 56 countries. The average revenue per user (ARPU) for mobile operators will go up to Rs 540 from Rs 315 on a quarterly basis with the advent of 3G wireless communication technology in the country, said Mr Rakesh Malik, Vice-President (Account Management and Corporate Affairs), Siemens Public Communication Networks. "The 3G spectrum should be allocated to the leading operator of the zone, who must then distribute it to smaller niche players," he said, adding that a swift allocation was required to meet market demands.
