`Remove curbs on traditional Indian medicines'

New Delhi , Nov. 18

The international community must not create trade barriers by banning traditional Indian medicines citing arbitrary barriers in the name of safety, Union Health Minister, Mr Anbumani Ramadoss said at the inauguration of a two-day international conclave on traditional medicines.

"We live in a global society today and a significant segment of the population in most of developed nations is used to traditional medicine products for generations. Hence erecting artificial non-tariff technical barriers to trade of traditional medicine products could infringe on their right to have products of their choice," Mr Ramadoss was quoted in an official release.

"India has a proper administrative set up to ensure regulation and development of Indian systems of medicines and homoeopathy, in terms of regulatory bodies for education and practice of these systems and Drug and Cosmetics Act and Rules for regulation of traditional medicine products," he added.
