Shipping Govt aid sought for dredging projects Our Bureau
Chennai , Nov. 18 The National Shipping Board has recommended to the Union Government to provide financial support to port trusts for capital dredging projects at major ports. "We want at least one-third of the project cost to be borne by the centre," said Mr K. Suresh, Chairman, Chennai Port Trust. Dredging projects worth over Rs 2,000 crore are planned in the next couple of years at various ports. Internationally, the Government fully funded such projects while in India it was the responsibility of the respective ports, he told newspersons after the 106th meeting of the National Shipping Board. Some of the dredging projects are at Jawaharlal Nehru Port (Rs 800 crore), Paradip (Rs 250 crore) and Ennore (Rs 143 crore). There were similar projects at Tuticorin and Chennai, apart from the Rs 2,000-cr dredging component of Sethusamudram, he said. The dredging projects would help ports accommodate large ships, especially containers.
