Kandla coping with wheat, fertiliser imports

HANDLING problems at Kandla port

The authorities at Kandla Port Trust are constantly monitoring the discharge, loading and evacuation of imported wheat and fertilisers as these two items have been given top priority by the Government, perhaps rightly so. Since October, there has been a series of wheat and fertiliser vessels calling at the port, causing congestion and other problems. The port handled 2.22 lakh tonnes of fertilisers (15 vessels) and 4.73 lakh tonnes of food (10 vessels). The authorities expect 10 more wheat vessels and 21 more fertiliser vessels will arrive by December end.

The efficiency in the evacuation of wheat and fertilisers has not been up to the mark either. Against the requirement of at least 12 rakes a day, only eight to 10 rakes are available, causing an increase in the ground stock. Right now, the port is holding a stock of about two lakh tonnes of wheat and another 1.4 lakh tonnes of fertilisers. But the Railways cannot always be blamed. In addition to wheat and fertilisers, the port also handles salt, which too an essential item, and priority has to be accorded to allotting rakes for its transportation.
