Major shipping alliances are planning to cut capacity in the slack season from November to April. Thus, the members of the Grand Alliance in Trans-Pacific trade have decided to cut down capacity by about 3,000 TEUs per week. The downward adjustment will be in tune with the anticipated drop in trade demand during the period.

Interestingly, not all the Grand Alliance members subscribe to this policy. Thus, while Hapag Lloyd, NYK and OOCL have indicated to lay up capacity, the fourth member of the group, MISC Berhad, has decided not to. Another shipping alliance, The New World Alliance, engaged in Trans-Pacific, Asia-Europe and Intra-Asia trades too have announced plans to reduce their capacity by about 4,000 TEUs per week.

Its member-lines are APL, Hyundai Merchant Marine and Mitsui OSK Lines. While the capacity adjustment is aimed at maximising efficient asset utilisation and managing increasing costs, some of the lines will also use the opportunity to undertake routine maintenance and repair of their vessels.
